Luz Marina Díaz’s Hope for Spiritual Direction
“The word expansion comes to mind when reflecting on hope in spiritual direction. First, I hope the ministry of spiritual direction reaches every corner so that all people including those on the margins can benefit from it… Also individuals with a desire to be trained as spiritual directors should be able to receive financial support to pursue their vocation.
As the number of spiritual directors increases, we need more supervisors. I hope that spiritual directors feel called to be trained as supervisors as it is essential to support their peers in both individual and facilitated group supervision.
I hope all programs include in their training development of a profound cultural awareness as we seek to welcome the other, taking into account the various cultures and subcultures we embody.
Another hope is to train all spiritual directors to create trauma informed spaces…. By creating supportive and safe spaces for our directees we as spiritual directors can establish better boundaries and maintain integrity, consistency and resilience in our listening care. ”
This month’s reflection is offered by Luz Marina Díaz. Luz was born in Caracas, Venezuela and moved to New York in 1994 where she found her calling as a religious educator, spiritual director, supervisor, and liturgical dancer. She offers individual and group spiritual direction and directs Ignatian retreats, including the Spiritual Exercises. She currently serves as the Director of the Spiritual Direction Practicum at Fordham University.
