Christina Leaño’s Hope for Spiritual Direction
“My hope as a spiritual director is to be able to pass on the graces and gifts I have received through spiritual accompaniment. As a spiritual director, I remind myself that it is the Holy Spirit who is in charge, who is the true spiritual director. I am there to accompany, to listen deeply to the movements of God’s grace in the other and to offer the opportunity to touch into God’s loving actions within them.
I love to invite nature into my spiritual direction sessions. As Pope Francis said in Laudato Si, “nature is filled with words of love if only we take the time to listen.” I find most directees have experienced the divine in nature and it can be a wonderful way to open to new ways of seeing God’s words and actions in their lives.”
This month’s reflection is offered by Christina Leaño, who is a retreat leader, spiritual director, and meditation teacher with over 15 years of experience facilitating spiritual and contemplative programs to diverse audiences. She is in an Ignatian Spiritual Direction Formation Program co-sponsored by Loyola Jesuit Center of Morristown, NJ and St. Joseph’s University of Philadelphia, PA. Christina serves as Associate Director of the Laudato Si' Movement mobilizing the Catholic family worldwide to turn Pope Francis’ encyclical letter, Laudato Si’: On Care for our Common Home into action for climate and ecological justice. She received a M.A. in Systematic Theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA and lives in the New York City area with her daughter.
